The Story of Trinity Wesleyan Church
Trinity Wesleyan Church has a rich history rooted in faith and a commitment to sharing the Gospel. The church began as Spray Mission in 1942, founded by Rev. William Bryant Tillman and his wife, Beulah. Wanting to establish a new ministry without detracting from his previous work at Spray Wesleyan Methodist Church, Rev. Tillman launched Spray Mission, which quickly grew to 30-40 attendees.
Recognizing the need for revival, Rev. Tillman invited Rev. F.R. Cooper from the Pilgrim Holiness Church to lead a tent crusade. Beginning on May 27, 1942, the revival saw many come to faith and commit their lives to Christ. As the movement gained momentum, Rev. Tillman, feeling the need for a younger leader, transitioned the ministry to the Pilgrim Holiness Church on June 27, 1942. Rev. Cooper was then called to be the first pastor.
As revival continued, another tent crusade was held in the fall of 1942, leading to the purchase of land at 521 Turner Street and West Aiken Rd. A church building was constructed in 1943 with volunteer labor, using 4,500 handmade cement blocks. Over the years, the church expanded, adding an educational unit in the 1950s and additional facilities in 1972 to accommodate growth.
In 1968, the Pilgrim Holiness Church and Wesleyan Methodist Church merged, forming The Wesleyan Church. To reflect this change, Spray Pilgrim Holiness Church became Trinity Wesleyan Church.
Throughout the years, Trinity has taken bold steps of faith, including:
• 1980s-1990s: Expansion of the sanctuary, addition of a baptistry, and purchase of 22 acres for a new location.
• 1991: Establishment of Trinity Wesleyan Educational Center as a ministry extension.
• 1992: Completion of a new church building at 186 East Aiken Rd., with services beginning in August and dedication in October.
• 2003 & 2006: Construction of a childcare facility, followed by a gym, classrooms, and cafeteria.
After faithfully pastoring for nearly 35 years, Rev. Wayne Johnson passed away in 2015. Following two interim pastors, Rev. Michael Brady led Trinity from 2016 to 2024, fostering growth and fresh ministry vision.
In February 2025, Rev. David Bunn was called to serve as the next pastor. Excitement abounds as Trinity Wesleyan Church continues its mission of fulfilling the Great Commission—to make disciples, share the love of Christ, and impact the community for God’s Kingdom.
We pray for God’s continued blessing over Trinity Wesleyan Church as we remain steadfast in making Jesus the Subject—in our lives, our families, and our community.
